Are Your Shoulders Stable?

Pectoralis_minorEach month at CenterFit we focus on a different area of mobility.  As we begin April we are looking at the anterior shoulder compartment.  Most of us spend a lot of time with our shoulders rounded forward.  Think about your normal posture when you sit at a desk all day, type on a keyboard or when you drive a car.  Do you tend to hunch forward?  If you answered no, congratulations on maintaining good posture!  But if you do tend to hunch over while doing these things (like most people) you may want to think about  working on shoulder mobility.

Spending a lot of time with your shoulders rounded forward can result in tissues getting tight and short which restricts your ability to put your shoulders into a stable position.   Over time, not only do your shoulders get locked into a compromised position, it can adversely affect your thoracic spine, scapula, and pectoralis minor.  Your arms start to internally rotate as a way to stabilize your shoulder and if you add load or tension to this position you end up getting extremely tight and stiff in your pectoralis minor.  This is the area that we’ll be targeting throughout April.

We invite you to join us with our regular HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts to reap the benefits of getting into great shape and  working on getting your shoulders to move more freely.  If you’d like to get started, feel free to contact us to activate your FREE 1-Week Trial.
